The Magaliesberg Historical Society Living Museum, its mission is to preserve the agricultural heritage of the region—and tobacco is a massive part of that history. In fact, the Magaliesberg region was once the heart of the South African tobacco industry. For over a century, "Magaliesberg Tobacco" was a household name in South Africa. The unique soil and climate of the Magaliesberg valleys were found to be ideal for growing high-quality leaf. The trade began to shift in the late 20th century. By the 1970s and 80s, large tobacco companies began to favor different varieties or international sources. Many farmers in the Magaliesberg area transitioned away from tobacco. The Living Museum focuses on demonstrating historical life and have historical displays of tobacco cutters, drying racks, and the iconic tobacco pouches displaying the region's historic trade. The natural fabric drawstring bags contain locally made tobacco from Magaliesberg. Tobacco is old, merely for decorative or collective purposes.
