They were mainly used in the Victorian era to summon servants and were often seen as a sign of wealth and prominence. Before the advent of electric buzzers, Victorian homes utilized a hidden wire and pulley system. A tug on the decorative needlepoint pull applied tension to a copper or iron wire hidden behind the walls or ceiling. This wire ran through various cranks and pivots to a central bank of bells, usually located in the kitchen or servants' hall. In today's day and age, this will work great as a table runner!
