Manufactured by Shepherd & Barker Ltd a prominent South African furniture manufacturer and retailer, particularly active in Johannesburg throughout the 20th century. Their armchairs are highly regarded for their craftsmanship and solid construction. Their factory was notably located at 127 Pritchard Street, a building now recognized on the South African Heritage Register as a site of historical interest. While they were established in the early 1900s (with legal records dating back as far as 1906), they became a household name for high-quality domestic furniture during the mid-20th century (1930s–1970s). The armchair reflects the "English Regency" influence, featuring ornate carvings, cabriole legs and ball-and-claw feet. The seat is upholstered in a floral patterned needlepoint design. The chair is sturdy and strong. Inner frame bears the manufacturer's plaque. Dimensions: 61cm (w) x 92.5cm (h) x 49cm (d)
