This is a beautiful example of a 19th-century Roberval balance scale, a design patented by French mathematician Gilles Personne de Roberval in 1669 that revolutionized weighing by allowing pans to remain level regardless of where the weight was placed. This specific model features a classic faux marble top set upon a solid wood base with decorative inlay, characteristic of the scales used in European pharmacies or upscale grocers during the late 1800s. The front displays a circular brass viewing port for the internal leveling mechanism. Regarding its condition, the scale shows a charming aged patina; the wood base has some expected scuffs and wear consistent with its era, the faux marble remains intact with some light staining, and while the iron cross-supports are present, the original brass or ceramic weighing pans are missing. Dimensions: 35.5cm x 14cm x 9cm (h)
