This substantial antique butter churn stands 37.5cm tall and features a sturdy glass base embossed with "Made in England" and "4 Imperial Quarts". The mechanical assembly is comprised of a robust cast iron hand-crank gear system that operates internal wooden paddles, all of which are housed under a metal screw-top lid. Gear-driven glass churns reached their peak in home kitchens from the mid-1800s through the 1940s. They were designed to replace more labor-intensive wooden "dash" churns, offering a mechanical advantage through gears that allowed for faster agitation of the cream. Despite its appearance in photos, the item is quite large with a base footprint of 17cm x 17cm. The churn is in good vintage condition with an authentic aged patina and surface rust on the metal components that highlights its industrial history, while the glass remains clear and free of major cracks.
