This striking, fluidly carved Shona stone sculpture is the work of recognized Zimbabwean artist Prosper Chigwada, hand-incised with his signature on the base. Masterfully balancing contrasting textures and tones, the piece depicts a stylized, bending female figure washing or tending to her long, flowing hair. The body is sculpted from a dense, heavy black stone—likely dark springstone or a deep black serpentine variety—polished to a high-gloss, mirror-like sheen, while the hair and base are left unpolished with a finely textured, matte grey finish. Notably, the stone features a continuous, vibrant green natural vein running across the lower back, torso, and thigh, showcasing the inherent beauty of the raw geological material. The sculpture stands in stable condition with minor surface lines and naturally occurring fissures inherent to the stone, alongside light wear consistent with age. No damage to the stone.
