Produced by Shelley Potteries (formerly Wileman & Co.) at the Foley Potteries in Longton, Staffordshire, this vase exemplifies the firm's transitional Art Deco decorative ware of the early 1920s. British Registered Design number Rd 673706 dates the registration of this distinctive shape specifically to 1920, while the backstamp features the green Shelley "shield" mark used primarily between 1910 and 1925. The piece presents a bold, elongated conical silhouette defined by a stark contrast between the mottled matte-black body and an enamelled frieze of stylised roses and blossoms along the flared rim.

The underside is fully marked with the registered design registration number, pattern reference 8516 / 812, and the printed factory maker's shield.
