Dating to the First World War through the Interwar era (circa 1916–1939), this antique japanned tinplate officer's transit case was produced by the esteemed military and naval outfitter Gieves. Finished in traditional heat-cured black japanning, it was designed to protect a dress bicorne hat and naval accoutrements during transit, featuring a hinged conical lid, folding wire carry handle, hasp closure, and an interior divider ledge. The front displays an embossed brass "Gieves" Royal Warrant maker's crest alongside period hand-painted gilt personalization for "Capt. I. H. Lauder, Royal Marines."
