This substantial storage kist is masterfully crafted from solid South African Knysna Yellowwood, showcasing the timber's celebrated golden hue and fine, even grain. The piece features a striking "log-style" aesthetic with deep, horizontal grooves carved into the front and sides to mimic stacked timber, complemented by a thick, live-edge top that preserves the natural silhouette of the tree. Measuring 150cm (l) x 54cm (w) x 53cm (h), the chest opens to a generous storage interior secured by internal support straps and a central metal latch. Condition-wise, the kist is sturdy and structurally sound with a beautiful honey-toned finish, showing some characteristic surface scratches and minor scuffs to the interior lid and hinge areas consistent with authentic use and age. PLEASE NOTE: The whole kist is Knysna yellowwood, except for the inner bottom layer - this is pine wood. Knysna Yellowwood (Afrocarpus falcatus) is one of South Africa’s most iconic and protected "National Trees." Its rarity stems from centuries of over-exploitation during the 18th and 19th centuries when it was the primary timber for railway sleepers and colonial furniture. Today, the trade of this wood is strictly regulated; it can generally only be harvested from fallen trees in protected Afro-temperate forests or sourced through licensed auctions of older, reclaimed pieces. Finding large, solid-slab items—especially those featuring the wide, live-edge sections seen on this lid—is increasingly difficult, making it a highly prized investment for collectors of South African heritage furniture.
