An early 20th-century landscape oil painting depicting a tranquil river winding through a mountainous valley, flanked by silver birch trees and rocky outcrops. Executed with atmospheric soft tones and delicate brushwork, the composition reflects the British Romantic landscape tradition popularized during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. The canvas features the Winsor & Newton manufacturer's stamp on the reverse and is presented in a gilded ornate frame with a fabric-wrapped liner. H. B. Davis was one of several pseudonyms used by the prolific Scottish/British landscape painter Francis E. Jamieson (1895–1950). Active during the early 20th century, Jamieson frequently painted picturesque scenes of the Scottish Highlands, English countryside, and lake districts, adopting various aliases—including H. B. Davis, Graham Williams, and Arnold Pienne—to fulfill commercial demand and distribute his works to diverse art markets. His paintings are recognized for their atmospheric treatment of light, natural water features, and romanticized British landscapes. The canvas remains taut with good tension and displays light, age-appropriate surface craquelure. The reverse shows natural age toning to the canvas weave and a clear, original Winsor & Newton maker stamp. The frame exhibits minor chipping and loss to the gesso/gilt finish along the bottom right corner edge, alongside general light scuffing and wear to the gilded surfaces. Dimensions: 68.5cm x 56cm
