Carved wooden hall chair, often referred to as a Gothic Revival or ecclesiastical chair, dating from the 19th or early 20th century. It features a high, solid back panel with an arched top, typical of the Gothic styles. The back includes an ornate, shallow relief carving of scrolling acanthus leaf motif in the arch. Hall chairs like this were traditionally placed in the entrance hall of a home to serve as a status symbol, and provide a convenient, albeit sometimes uncomfortable, seat for putting on or removing footwear. Dimensions: 162.5cm (h) x 69.5cm (w) x 57.5cm (d)
