This is a significant first edition of Moerbeibos (The Mulberry Forest), published in 1987 by Tafelberg-Uitgewers. Written by the renowned South African author Dalene Matthee, this novel is part of her celebrated "Forest Novels" series set in the Knysna forest. The story follows a group of Italian silk-immigrants who arrive in the Cape in the 1880s, only to find themselves misled and struggling for survival in a landscape far harsher than promised. Matthee is widely regarded as one of the most important Afrikaans writers, known for her meticulous historical research and her ability to highlight the deep connection between the forest and its inhabitants. The book is in good vintage condition, featuring its original dust jacket with cover art by Helmut Starcke; there is some light shelf wear and minor chipping to the top edge of the jacket spine, but the binding remains firm and the internal pages are clean with a crisp first edition imprint.
