This lot features two volumes of the monumental Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (WAT), specifically Deel III (G) and Deel V (J-KJ), published by Die Staatsdrukker, Pretoria. The WAT is the most comprehensive descriptive dictionary of the Afrikaans language, a project initiated in 1926 to document the language in its entirety; Volume V, shown here, was published in 1968 under chief editor F.J. Snijman. These heavy, scholarly tomes are prized for their detailed entries, high-quality botanical and historical illustrations, and full-color plates of South African heraldry and fossils. Both volumes are bound in their original dark brown faux-leather with gold-gilt lettering and raised bands on the spines. The books are in good vintage condition, showing some light shelf wear and minor scuffing to the edges and spines, but the bindings remain tight and the internal pages are clean, crisp, and free from significant foxing or markings.
