This impressive, substantial vintage African elephant sculpture is masterfully hand-carved from a single piece of dense, beautifully grained tropical hardwood, showcasing contrasting deep chocolate and warm caramel tones. Standing at a striking 67cm high and 79cm long, the piece features finely textured details along the trunk, ears, and legs, complemented by prominent faux tusks that add to its commanding presence. Given its stylistic execution and material, it is an authentic mid-to-late 20th-century piece, likely crafted by skilled artisans in East or Southern Africa during the height of mid-century curio and art exports. The sculpture is in good vintage condition with a beautiful natural patina, though it does exhibit a structural age crack running vertically down its left flank behind the shoulder—a common characteristic of large-scale solid wood carvings as the core naturally seasons and moves over time. This is a large carving and very heavy.
